WARM DATA

The International Bateson Institute exists to generate and give access to information that offers a wider vision. The focus of inquiry is on the interrelational processes between and among systems. It can involve recognising how patterns repeat and reflect each other among multiple contexts and across multiple systems – many of these systems’ maintenance and renewal is critical in the coming decades.

The underlying premise of the IBI is to address and investigate how we perceive. Our work explores  different ways of finding other species of information and new patterns of connection that are not visible though current methodologies.

We call this information “Warm Data”.

WHAT IS WARM DATA?

“Warm Data” is information about the interrelationships that integrate elements of a complex system. Such data elucidates qualitative dynamics and offers another dimension of understanding to what is learned through quantitative data (i.e., cold data). Warm Data provides leverage in our analysis of other streams of information. The implications for the uses of Warm Data are staggering, and may offer a whole new dimension to the tools of information science we have to work with at present.

WHY WARM DATA IS IMPORTANT

In order to interface with any complex system without disrupting the circuitry of the interdependencies that give it its integrity, we must look at the scope of relationships that make the system robust. Using only analysis of statistical data will offer conclusions that point to actions that are out of sync with the complexity of the situation. Information without interrelationality is likely to lead us toward actions that are misinformed, thereby creating further destructive patterns.

IN WHAT IS WARM DATA INVOLVED?

Everything. Business, medical, economics, development, ecological understanding, cross cultural diplomacy, and more. The IBI makes this data available to political, cultural, economic, educational, and arts sectors.
